Weight loss

Who is eligible for weight-loss treatment in the UK?

Most regulated UK providers will consider you for weight-loss treatment from a BMI of 30, or from 27 if you also have a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure. Thresholds are lower for some ethnic backgrounds, and the final decision always sits with a registered prescriber after an assessment.

Common questions

Eligibility, answered

Am I eligible for weight-loss treatment with a BMI of 27?

Usually only if you also have a weight-related condition, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea. At 27 with no such condition, most regulated providers will decline and suggest speaking to your GP about other support.

Does type 2 diabetes change my eligibility?

Yes. A weight-related condition like type 2 diabetes lowers the BMI point at which providers will assess you, typically from 30 to 27. It also makes the medical-history part of the assessment more involved, because your existing care and medicines need to be taken into account.

Will I need to prove my weight?

Increasingly, yes. Many providers ask for full-body photos, a video check or verified scales readings rather than accepting a typed-in number. That protects you: the thresholds exist because treatment below them carries risk without the benefit.

Is there an age limit?

Online providers require you to be 18 or over, and some set an upper age limit or add extra checks for older patients. Weight-management care for under-18s runs through the NHS with specialist oversight, not through online services.

What if I don't meet the criteria?

A regulated provider will decline — and that answer will be the same wherever you ask, because the criteria come from national guidance rather than any one company. Your GP can talk through NHS weight-management programmes and other support that doesn't depend on a BMI threshold.
