Hair loss

Why am I losing my hair?

Usually because of pattern hair loss — the hereditary kind that develops gradually and affects around half of men by 50 and many women after the menopause. Heavier shedding after an illness, childbirth, rapid weight loss or a stressful few months is common too, and usually temporary. Sudden or patchy loss is the kind to show a GP.

Common questions

Hair loss, answered

How much hair loss is normal?

Losing between 50 and 100 hairs a day is normal, and it can look like more on wash days or when you brush. Steady shedding with no thinning patches and no change at the hairline is usually nothing to act on.

Does stress really cause hair loss?

Yes, though not instantly. A sustained stressful period or a shock to the body pushes extra follicles into their resting phase, so the shedding appears two to three months later. It settles once the trigger passes, and the hair usually regrows on its own.

Will my hair grow back?

It depends on the cause. Shedding after illness, childbirth or stress usually regrows over a few months. Pattern hair loss doesn't return by itself. Patchy loss from alopecia areata often regrows, but unpredictably. A GP or pharmacist can tell you which type yours looks like.

Can women get pattern hair loss?

Yes. It shows differently: a widening parting and thinner volume overall rather than a receding hairline, and it becomes more common after the menopause. The same hereditary mechanism is behind it.

Is hair loss ever a sign of something serious?

Rarely, but it can point to something that needs checking, such as a thyroid problem, low iron or a scalp infection. Sudden loss, bald patches, a sore or scaly scalp, or feeling unwell at the same time are the signs to take to a GP.
